The lobsters are coming! The lobsters are coming! And these Nova Scotia beauties have found a home on the ground floor of the Scotia Plaza in a sparkling restaurant called Lbs. (that’s pounds to you – as in lobster pounds.) The young co-founders are not fishermen, but they sure know the business. Jonathan Gonsenhauser is an advanced Court of Master Sommelier and played a monumental role in bringing Real Sports Bar and Grill and e11even to fruition, then went to Momofuko as Beverage Director. Co-founder Will Tomlinson has been in Hospitality in Australia, Bahamas, UK and Canada and has impeccable credentials including a WSET Diploma in London and an MBA in Wine from Bordeaux.
They know exactly what we want, and what you see is what you get. Four menu items: steamed lobster and fries; lobster salad; lobster roll and fries; and a 6 oz beef burger with old Ontario Cheddar, a rasher of bacon and fries. Each item $22.00. Who can ask for anything more? Well, yes, we can. We mosey on over to the horseshoe shaped bar, the domain of bartender Holly Caverly (Bar Isabel and Momofuko) whose cocktails please the eye and the palate and have us begging for another, please.
But wait! This is the only restaurant in town that sells Krug Champagne by the glass! If you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it.
Let’s get technical. How are they storing these lovely oceanic critters? Through the thick glass walled kitchen, you can see state of the art equipment and a tank that holds up to 2000 lbs. of lobsters. It’s a lobster pound – right in the kitchen. They’ll be proud to give you a tour.
The thousands of folks who slave away in offices at the Scotia Plaza are thrilled to bits with the take out window. Lunch at the desk or boardroom, or takeaway for dinner at home – this is a fantastic convenience. Exclusive Sam James coffee at 8:00 a.m. and lobster rolls in the afternoon at $16.00 have become a big hit.
Lbs. is open from 11:30 to 10:30 p.m. six days a week and is an exciting addition to our restaurant scene.
