“Where would you recommend for Canadian cuisine?” This is a question I’m often asked. Now I can answer: Antler Kitchen & Bar.

Chef Michael Hunter is, appropriately, a hunter. He is also a chef, a forager, a photographer and an artist. From flipping eggs at a diner in Caledon as a teenager, his storied career led him to plan an Italian restaurant with his business partner Jody Shapiro. In a moment of clarity, both Michael and Jody recognized that neither one of them is actually Italian; and that Toronto does not really need another Italian restaurant. Where To DINE Now: 309 Dhaba

Complex and exotic delicacies prepared by Chef PK Singh Ahluwalia and his personally trained kitchen staff reveal rare expertise with the many cuisines of India that is as impressive as it gets. Flashing colours and provocative dances reflect the flavour profile of a menu that moves effortlessly across the map: from Punjab to Madras; Bengal to Goa; and from Mughal to British influences. Where To DINE Now: Qui Ristorante Pizzeria

There’s an Old Italian expression, non puoi avere la botte piena e la moglie ubriaca, which means “you can’t have a full wine barrel and a drunk wife.”

For me, “the best of both worlds” is: authenticity and value for money. It’s not easy for a new Italian restaurant to distinguish itself in Toronto, a city already spun with pasta, but I have found what I’m looking for here at Qui Ristorante Pizzeria (Qui means here in Italian), where we taste classic Italian dishes that I’ve actually never even heard of before.
