SARA SAYS…
Happy 20th Birthday! It was named to honour Fausto Coppi, renowned Italian bicycle racer. To celebrate two decades of serving a finicky clientele the uncomplicated, traditional cuisine of Abruzzi, Italy as well as sincere gems from other regions of this cuisine rich country, Coppi is modernizing itself. Slightly. This handsome room will be opened up to take advantage of its best characteristics, and will be renovated, floor to ceiling. Alex Scotto, proprietor, has assured me however, that the well-loved menu will not change.
And what of the warm crusty bread, sprinkled with rosemary and brought with personally sourced, first-press olive oil that they’ve been serving for decades? “That stays”, he says, “and so does the unique sea bream or red snapper baked in a salt crust.” With a surgeon’s skill, Alex removes the crust, soft-brushes the remaining salt away, bones the fish and offers a drizzle of olive oil. Renowned for their truffle service, fall for white truffles and spring for black, he will continue to indulge us with special menus and showers of truffles on steaming hand-made pasta. We are assured that it’s business as usual: proscuitto and Parmigiano-Reggiano from Parma, tomatoes from San Marzano for house-made sauce; and bottarga from the Adriatic Coast. Alex Scotto assures me, the heart and soul of this restaurant will never change. “Fresh fish, that’s what we do.”
