SARA SAYS…

At Coquine, you feel the love! In a perfect world, there would be bistros like this everywhere. White and black tile floors in the bar—the domain of mixologist Adam Karrlson—and dark wood in the dining room. Owner Robert Prete has proven that a neighbourhood bistro need not be over formal or over the top French. If you’re at one of Jeffrey’s tables, you just got lucky. Here’s a server who can turn a simple evening into a special event. Ask him for a special “hot-shot” after dinner. Chef Alejandro Bustamante knows how to offer challenging classics for this crowd, and yet add a few culinary twists and turns to make it simple: Coquine salad is arugula with warm Niagara prosciutto-wrapped figs, gorgonzola, candied walnuts and sherry vinaigrette. Escargots are sautéed in garlic Pernod butter and topped with melting Gruyère. Some days, they roast a whole sea bass. Pasta always pleases: simple penne pomodoro and up-scale wild mushroom ravioli. He wraps pork tenderloin in bacon and citifies it with maple Dijon glaze. In true bistro style, there is steak frites, and a très chic duo of duck with blueberry balsamic sauce. Be careful, Coquine can be addictive. Try it once and you will return again and again.
