The Mixing Star

instagram_channel Earlier this summer, master mixologists gathered at The Spoke Club in Toronto to compete for the title of Disaronno “The Mixing Star”. The competition was as fierce as Toronto’s bartenders are skilled and imaginative, but one in particular stood out: Simon Hooper‘s inspired elixir: Juan Gallardo the Matador. Citric, smoky and sweet, this iconic fragrant and delicate amaretto cocktail rose to the top. Check out the Disaronno website for classic and creative cocktails at disaronno.com. Here’s the winning cocktail recipe below:

Juan Gallardo the Matador – Inspired by the 1922 bullfighting silent film, “Blood & Sand”

  • 20mL DISARONNO®
  • 20mL Cazadorez Añejo Tequila
  • 20mL Martini & Rosso Sweet Vermouth
  • 20mL Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice
  • 2 Dashes Scrappy’s Lavender Bitters
  • Lapsang Souchong Tea
  • CO2 Fog Dry Ice Pellets

Method:

Set two glasses next to each other on a marble plate, ensuring a bell jar can cover both glasses. Combine three tbsp Lapsang Souchong tea in a loose leaf tea bag and steep in 60 mL of boiling water. Set aside. In a shaker, combine DISARONNO®, Cazadores story-2011b Añejo Tequila, Martini & Rosso Sweet Vermouth, freshly squeezed orange juice and Scrappy’s Lavender Bitters. Add ice. Shake hard and fine strain into one of the glasses. Fill the other glass with dry ice pellets (be careful!!). Pour Lapsang Souchong tea over dry ice and cover both glasses with the bell jar. Allow the CO2 fog to engulf the glasses for 30 seconds. Remove the bell jar and serve.
