Top Honours at Toronto’s Gold Medal Plates Competition

Chef Jonathan Gushue of Langdon Hall Country House Hotel & Spa located in Cambridge, ON proved his culinary prowess last night when he took home the gold award at the Toronto 2011 Gold Medal Plates competition. Chef Gushue went head-to-head with Toronto’s finest culinary masters at this prestigious culinary competition, held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in downtown Toronto on November 9, 2011. Jonathan will compete at the Canadian Culinary Championships, the Gold Medal Plates Finale, held in Kelowna in February, 2012.

To secure the win, Chef Gushue wowed the judges with his creative dish of Kitchen Garden Brussels, White Salsify and Black Salsify Chips, Preserved Oysters, Duck’s Egg and Smoked Trout Caviar. The paired wine was Organized Crime, 2009, Fume Blanc.

“Gold Medal Plates is an exciting and challenging event for all of the competing chefs. I am very honoured that the Gold Medal Plates chose my dish as the best,” said Jonathan Gushue, Chef of Langdon Hall. “My team and I worked very hard to make our dish the best it could be, and I’m thrilled our efforts resulted in the gold. Now, I am looking forward to taking this to the next step, and competing for the national title!”

Chef Rob Gentile of Buca rose to the occasion as well, taking the silver medal. Chef Gentile created the culinary wonder of Tortelli D’oca: Goose Offal and Porcini filled Pasta with Cured Goose Breast, Hazelnut and Crisp Rosemary. The paired wine was 13th Street Winery, 2010, Merlot.

Taking the bronze medal was Michael Steh and his team from Reds Bistro and Wine Bar. His dish was simply namely titled “BACON”, done in a variety of ways, beautifully displayed on a creative plate. The paired wine was Chateau des Charmes, 2008, “Old Vines” Riesling, Estate Bottled.

The guests were not only treated to the finest in food, they also had the opportunity to mingle with celebrated Olympians and Paralympians and entertained by The Brit Band comprised of Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Ed Robertston (Barenaked Ladies) and more. Acrobatics were on display while desserts were enjoyed, again paired with lovely dessert wines to cap off an incredible evening!
